ACS CAN Applauds Albany and Chautauqua County Leaders

for Enactment of Tobacco 21 Bill

ALBANY, NY  – Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan has each signed into law a measure that will prohibit the sale of cigarettes, tobacco products, liquid nicotine and electronic cigarettes to anyone under 21.

Albany and Chautauqua County have joined New York City and Suffolk County as localities in New York State with such a law.

Julie Hart, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) New York State director of government relations released the following statement.

“We applaud County Executives McCoy and Horrigan. This law will save lives.

“Some 13,200 New York State residents will hear the horrifying news this year that they have lung cancer. Research shows that if a person does not begin smoking at a young age, they are much less likely to ever smoke. Tobacco continues to claim too many lives and is the leading cause of preventable death. This law will not only save lives but also dramatically cut health care costs.

“Thank you County Executives McCoy and Horrigan for acting to protect the health of the people in your counties.”
