How You Can Help Hold Big Tobacco Accountable
Nearly 20 years ago, a U.S. Federal District judge found that the major cigarette manufacturers violated civil racketeering laws for deliberately defrauding the public.
On Monday, May 14th, 2012, the Maryland General Assembly convened a special three-day session to complete the work of balancing the state’s 2013 budget. Among the measures approved was a revenue package which included a tax on small cigars that will increase from 15% of wholesale to 70% of wholesale and the tax on smokeless tobacco products will increase from 15% of wholesale to 30% of wholesale.
Governor O'Malley expected to sign the legislation on Tuesday, May 22 and the new tax rate will take effect July 1, 2012.
