MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is part of a coalition of 30 organizations warning lawmakers about Senate Bill 84 and House Bill 477, which would allow the sale of substandard and dangerous health plans by the Alabama Farmers Federation or ALFA. In response, Alabama Government Relations Director Jane Adams released the following statement:
“We have grave concerns about the harmful effects SB84 and HB477 would have on Alabamians. The sale of substandard health plans would jeopardize access to health care and financial security for thousands of Alabamians who may enroll in them without realizing they do not offer the same coverage as health insurance.
“Neither bill includes protections against pre-existing conditions, which would have catastrophic consequences for patients. We have heard stories from farm bureau plan enrollees or applicants in other states who were denied coverage for pre-existing conditions such as carpel tunnel, kidney stones, diabetes or a previous biopsy that came back negative. They are then left with the choice to either skip important care or take on hefty medical bills that could lead to medical debt. These plans are a clear step backward.
“In addition, neither SB84 nor HB477 covers all federally designated essential health benefits, such as preventive screenings and newborn care.
“People need access to real health insurance that is regulated by federal and state law. We urge lawmakers to reject SB 84 and HB477 and instead work toward real solutions that ensure all Alabamians have access to quality, affordable healthcare.”
