Las Vegas Landmark Shines in Honor of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

The High Roller Observation Wheel at The Linq Shined Teal and White to Honor Patients, Survivors, and Lives Lost to Cervical Cancer

January 18, 2025

High Roller Lit Up for Cervical Cancer LAS VEGAS, NEV. –  The High Roller Observation Wheel at The Linq Promenade shined teal and white on Friday night in honor of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed in January. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) joined other local advocacy groups and cervical cancer survivors at The Linq Promenade to recognize those who have battled the disease.

Friday night’s observation coincides with a brand-new report released by the American Cancer Society (ACS) on Thursday. According to Cancer Facts and Figures, cancer cases are rising in women across the United States with incidences surprassing men, revealing a shift in the burden of the disease. Cervical cancer diagnoses have increased in women between the ages of 30-44. 140 women in Nevada are projected to be diagnosed with the disease in 2025. Of those diagnosed, 120 women are expected to die from the disease.

“Tonight’s lighting of the High Roller is an important reminder for all patients to prioritize their health,” said Samantha Gonzales-Russell, three-time cervical cancer survivor and ACS CAN Nevada volunteer. “With the news of rising cases of cervical cancer in younger women it’s crucial we remind Nevadans – screening and early detection saves lives; they saved mine.

If detected early, cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable cancers. Since her journey, Gonzales-Russell has become a volunteer advocate for ACS CAN, sharing her story to empower lawmakers to try to end the cancer burden as we know it.

ACS CAN is the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of ACS. The organization, made up of volunteer advocates, is urging state lawmakers in Nevada to support evidence-based public policies during the 2025 legislative session to fight cancer. The organization is also committed to working with members of the 119th Congress to support the highest possible funding for cancer research.

ACS CAN Nevada plans to host Cancer Action Day at the state capitol in Carson City on Monday, March 24th. Volunteers, including cancer survivors, patients, and caregivers from across the state will convene at the capitol to meet with state lawmakers and ask them for their support in the fight against cancer.
