DALLAS - The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the American Lung Association, and American Heart Association commend the Dallas City Council's recent amendment to the city’s comprehensive smoke-free ordinance to include e-cigarettes, vaporizers, and other electronic smoking devices. This significant update reflects the council's ongoing commitment to safeguarding public health. It instills a sense of security in the community to know that the council is dedicated to creating a safer environment for all Dallas residents.
By expanding the ordinance to address the rising use of e-cigarettes, Dallas sets a powerful example for other cities across Texas and the nation. This proactive step is based on a growing body of evidence and acknowledges the potential health risks associated with e-cigarettes. It reaffirms the city's dedication to protecting its citizens from the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke, ensuring the public feels cared for and valued.
"Today's decision by the Dallas City Council is a landmark moment in the fight for public health," said James Gray, Senior Government Relations Director, ACS CAN. "We are thrilled to see Dallas taking a stand against the dangers of e-cigarettes. This amendment not only protects people who do not smoke from secondhand exposure but also discourages the initiation of e-cigarette use among youth, contributing to a healthier future for our community."
The smoke-free ordinance, enacted in 2008, prohibited smoking in non-hospitality workplaces and bars. Adding e-cigarettes to the ordinance helps ensure that Dallas continues to lead in creating healthier environments free from the hazards of all forms of secondhand smoke.
Wednesday’s decision includes an implementation date of one year from now, however we encourage businesses to prohibit the use of e-cigarettes immediately to improve public health.
