2024 LEGISLATIVE WRAP-UP: KEY CANCER WINS

Governor Newsom has signed three of our sponsored bills, representing wins for tobacco prevention and cancer research. These measures are set to take effect on January 1, 2025.

ACS CAN Sponsored Bill Wins

  • AB 3218 (Wood) Unflavored Tobacco List – Prohibits a distributor from selling any tobacco products not listed on the Unflavored Tobacco List to any person for sale in the state and authorizes the Attorney General to assess civil penalties. Also refines the definition of characteristic flavor for purposes of the prohibition.

  • SB 1172 (Grove) Cancer Research Tax Checkoffs – Extends the California Breast Cancer Research Fund and the California Cancer Research Fund. These funds provide millions of dollars in cancer research through voluntary tax contributions.

  • SB 1230 (Rubio) Flavored Tobacco Seizure Bill – Permits the California Department of Tax and Fees Administration to seize flavored tobacco products discovered during inspections, which is an important preventive measure.
