Award is One of the Highest Honors Presented by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network for Legislative Leadership

Wausau, Wis. – State Representative Patrick Snyder received the State Representative of the Year award, one of the most prestigious awards presented by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), in recognition of his significant contributions to the fight against cancer in Wisconsin.

Representative Snyder authored and passed legislation to increase awareness of palliative care throughout the state and improve access to these services which can be provided alongside curative treatment to help ensure the best possible quality of life for the patient.

“Representative Snyder has been a champion on palliative care issues for years,” said Sara Sahli, ACS CAN Wisconsin government relations director. “This legislation offers hope to Wisconsinites who will be diagnosed with serious illnesses, including the nearly 40,000 Wisconsinites who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.”

Palliative care is specialized medical care that focuses on improving the quality of life for people with serious illnesses like cancer. It's provided by a team of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals working together with the patient, their family and caregiver. The team works with the patient to control pain and other symptoms, understand the patient's goals, and explain treatment options so the patient can choose what is best. Contrary to some misconceptions, palliative care is not end-of-life care and is appropriate at any age and any stage of illness.

“We thank Representative Snyder for his leadership and commitment to this critical issue,” added Sahli.
