ACSí Se Puede Hispanic/Latino Advocacy Alliance > Meet the Advocacy Alliance Members
7-year Volunteer Ambassador, ACT Lead, and a constituent from Kings County in Hanford CA.
I did not intend in becoming a volunteer and had no idea the American Cancer Society existed until two years after my mother passed away from Liver Cancer. A former colleague asked if I was interested in helping out at a booth. I didn’t think twice and just said yes without knowing what I was getting into.
I am no expert in the field of cancer science or research, I am only an advocate in memory of my loved ones. I lost my older sister to colon cancer two years before my mother's passing.
My aunt on my dad's side and an uncle on my mom’s side are cancer survivors. My uncle was diagnosed with enough time to wait for a liver transplant. Both are alive by the grace of god and science.
During my time as a volunteer, I have sent in several articles to our local papers and magazines in English and Spanish. I’ve also met with our local congressmen, been to several local events, helped at booths, and attended Lobby day in Washington DC for the first time in September of 2022. I meet with the representatives of California Connie Conway, met with Kevin McCarthy in person, and meet with the representative of David Valadao to ask for research funding.
I am a Culinary Arts Professional with a Bachelor’s in Nutrition and a Master’s in Leadership. I’m a 15-year expert in my field of nutrition and my personal goal is to change the reputation of school meals. I have been part of several Nutrition Educational projects in my county such as nutritional murals at schools, commercials promoting nutrition, and nutrition education. I love to cook feeding people makes me happy, I enjoy baking and traveling. I am married and have a teen daughter that keeps me on my toes and is following in my footsteps with her love of food and helping others.
