American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Priorities for 2021 Legislative Session

ACS CAN Looks Forward to Working with the Legislature to Reduce the Burden of Cancer

April 12, 2021

BATON ROUGE, LA – As lawmakers dive into the new legislative session, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) looks ahead to what public health initiatives our lawmakers can accomplish during the 2021 legislative session. Long after this pandemic passes, people deserve to live full, healthy lives.

ACS CAN is advocating for:

Breast and Cervical Cancer: maintaining funding of $700,000 for the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program, the state breast and cervical cancer screening and treatment program for low-income uninsured and underinsured women administered by the Louisiana Department of Health.

Research Appropriations: maintaining state funding of $500,000 to the Louisiana Tumor Registry, a statewide population-based registry that compiles information to help guide the policies for cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and survivorship.

ACS CAN volunteers look forward to virtually meeting with lawmakers during ACS CAN's annual Cancer Action Day on Wednesday, May 12. ACS CAN encourages individuals, businesses and organizations interested in these issues to reach out to ACS CAN to get involved in the fight against cancer at: fightcancer.org/LA.

About ACS CAN at 20
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) makes cancer a top priority for policymakers at every level of government. ACS CAN empowers volunteers across the country to make their voices heard to influence evidence-based public policy change that saves lives. We believe everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer. Since 2001, as the American Cancer Society’s nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, ACS CAN has successfully advocated for billions of dollars in cancer research funding, expanded access to quality affordable health care, and made workplaces, including restaurants and bars, smoke-free. As we mark our 20th anniversary, we’re more determined than ever to stand together with our volunteers and save more lives from cancer. Join the fight by visiting www.fightcancer.org.
