Eagle County Fights Big Tobacco at the Ballot

Tobacco use is the no. 1 cause of preventable death in the country. In Colorado alone this year, 5,100 adults will die from smoking while 1,900 kids under age 18 will become new daily smokers. Teens in Colorado are also using electronic cigarette at alarming rates as the state and nation face an epidemic of youth e-cigarette use.

Communities across Colorado have the opportunity to help save lives in your communities and protect kids from Big Tobacco. 

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) knows that raising the price of all tobacco products including e-cigarettes by at least $1 is one of the most effective ways to help people quit, while also preventing our youth from starting in the first place.

Eagle County will have the chance to vote “yes” on lifesaving tobacco tax increases of $4 per pack of cigarettes and 40% on the price of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products on the November ballot.

Tobacco use also costs the state nearly $1.9 billion in annual health care costs with each household paying roughly $654 in taxes to offset the financial cost of smoking on our economy.

Raising the price of all tobacco products will not only save lives, it will also generate vital new revenue, while lowering health care costs. It’s a win-win.
