SANTA FE, NEW MEX. – February 22, 2024 – State Representative Joy Garratt was honored with the ‘Legislative Champion Award’ by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) during a luncheon, Thursday. This award is the highest honor given by the organization. Garratt was recognized for her leading role in expanding access to biomarker testing in New Mexico. She served as a lead sponsor for HB 73 during the 2023 legislative session.
A new paper released today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology finds that while incorporating pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing into cancer care can help improve patient outcomes, barriers to PGx testing, discovery, and implementation are impacting its adoption and creating disparities that impact diverse populations.

Cancer patients, survivors, their families and caregivers from throughout Washington gathered at the Capitol on Monday to ask legislators to support House Bill 1450, which would have expanded insurance coverage of biomarker testing and made sure as many state residents as possible have access to this technology. They were disappointed to learn that the bill did not advance through House Appropriations and so instead turned their efforts and advocacy to the 2025 session.
