Great news out of the Northeast this summer, where both the New York and Rhode Island state legislatures passed bills that prohibit all minors under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices.

Oklahoma and West Virginia as the latest states to pass laws to protect minors from the dangers of indoor tanning. Currently, 15 states and the District of Columbia have adopted comprehensive indoor tanning laws.

Great news last week out of Massachusetts where Governor Charlie Baker and the state legislature enacted new legislation to prevent youth under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices. ACS CAN staff and volunteers have been working hard to protect Massachusetts teens from the harms of indoor tanning and we're hoping that this early legislative win in 2016 sets the tone for other states to do the same.

According to a new edition of the ACS CAN report How Do You Measure Up? released today, most state legislatures are missing opportunities to enact laws and policies that could not only save lives, but also generate new revenue and long-term health care savings.

The summer season kicks off today with Don't Fry Day, an annual day dedicated to encouraging good sun safety behavior to prevent skin cancer. As the American Cancer Society's Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Len, will tell you, it's critically important to wear good sunscreen and shade your skin from the sun starting at an early age. In addition to protecting yourself from the harmful rays of the sun, it's also important to avoid indoor tanning beds -- especially important for youth.
